In the latest news, former U.S. President Donald Trump has been charged for his
efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The case is being overseen
by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who has a reputation for being a tough
punisher of Capitol rioters.
She has sentenced at least 38 individuals convicted in Jan 6 riot-related
crimes, with some receiving prison terms of over five years. Judge Chutkan has
consistently matched or exceeded prosecutors' recommendations in sentencing,
believing that prison can serve as a deterrent against future
insurrections.
Trump's court appearance is scheduled for Thursday before Magistrate Judge
