During a rare visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Beijing, Chinese
President Xi Jinping expressed optimism about improving the
strained relationship between China and the
United States, although core disputes still remained unresolved.
Symbolically, President Xi welcomed Blinken at the Great Hall of the People,
highlighting progress and agreements on undisclosed issues. While both sides
downplayed expectations for significant breakthroughs, the talks focused on
restoring dialogue and managing differences.
Blinken acknowledged limited progress on engaging with China's military, but
emphasized the importance of sustained communication at senior levels to prevent
conflict. The two nations agreed to expand flights and explore discussions
regarding Chinese exports of fentanyl-related chemicals.
However, the issue of Taiwan remained a point of contention, with China
asserting its stance and warning against compromise. Blinken also raised
concerns about China's treatment of Uyghur and Tibetan minorities, as well as
the situation in Hong Kong. Overall, the visit maintained dialogue between the
two countries, but a deep divide remained. |
