The Power of Compassion

Compassion is not forced; it descends upon the world like dew from heaven. It brings happiness not only to the receiver but also to the giver.

- Shakespeare -

A few days ago, on my way home after dinner, I encountered an old man who stopped us and asked for directions: "Excuse me, sir, could you tell me how far it is to Xiaoshan?" Something felt off about his approach, as it's not common to address someone as "sir" when asking for directions. Nonetheless, it was a small favor to ask, so I pointed in the direction of Xiaoshan. The man nodded and then began to express his hardships: "Sir, I traveled all the way from my hometown to Xiaoshan to find my fellow townsman. I've run out of money, and my feet are in pain." He shifted his focus towards my friend Can, saying, "Could you please show some kindness and give me some money for a bowl of noodles?" I knew there was more to the story; it was clearly a scam, and a poorly executed one at that. Just look at him, who travels far with only one sandal? So, my father turned around and walked away.

This may seem like a trivial incident, and most people would probably make the same choice when faced with such a situation. However, it's worth reflecting on the fact that China, with its population of 1.3 billion, inevitably has the elderly, weak, and disabled who need assistance and compassion from others. If the person we encountered that day was genuinely in need of help, they too would have been turned away. Why is that? Is the human heart really so cold?

"At the beginning, human nature is inherently good." Human nature is inherently kind, but some individuals exploit this kindness for their own gain, tarnishing it and diminishing the spread of love.

There is no inherent darkness in this world; it simply lacks light. There is no inherent coldness; it simply lacks warmth. Similarly, there is no inherent evil; it simply lacks kindness. Just as the song goes, "If everyone gives a little love, this world will become a beautiful tomorrow." If each of us brings forth our own kindness, I believe darkness, coldness, and evil will cease to exist.
