The Impact of Television on Our Lives |
|
Television is a powerful medium that has an impact on our lives. While it is a
popular pastime in developed countries like America and Japan, it is not so in
poorer countries where most people do not have access to television. In
countries like Malaysia, where people spend an average of an hour or so a day
watching television, its influence is less felt.
In our fast-paced world, people have limited time for television. They are
caught up in work, school, and other pursuits that leave little time for passive
entertainment. However, whatever is transmitted on television can be
influential, especially for young and impressionable minds. American children,
who spend more time in front of the set and have less homework, are particularly
susceptible to negative influences. Advertisers try to persuade them to buy
goods and toys that may be undesirable or beyond their parents' budgets. They
may also imitate the actions and antics of heroes they see on TV, which can be
dangerous.
Television can also promote a consumer culture that upholds dubious ethical
values like liberal sex and violence. This can have a negative impact on young,
impressionable, and uneducated people. However, knowing parents, teachers, and
lawmen try to counter these influences by encouraging people to watch
educational programs or healthy dramas and game shows.
While most people in the world have access to television, they are caught up in
many other pursuits that mitigate its influence. Other media like mobile phones,
radio, and computers also compete for people's time. Ultimately, television is a
significant influence but does not exert too great an impact on our lives. |
