The Extraordinary Within the Ordinary

Walking home along the streetlights, strolling along a long-lost path, I suddenly felt a wave of inexplicable loneliness, with scattered pedestrians on the road. Perhaps it was the exhaustion of the day or the oppression of work, their expressions devoid of emotions, as if wearing the universally accepted face of society.

As night gradually fell, the long shadows on either side of me seemed to slow down, silently walking behind me. Following their unknown elongated shapes with my gaze, I saw lonely pine trees scattered along the path. For some reason, I intentionally approached one of them. As I got closer, I carefully examined it. It lacked the splendor of flowers and the fragrance of grass; in my eyes, its appearance was nothing but ordinary. Its rough surface made it look like a weathered old man, someone who had never been noticed or appreciated by anyone, including myself.

I wondered why I had approached this ordinary thing in the first place. As I turned around to leave, a sudden gust of wind blew through, tousling my hair. Looking along the wind's direction, I saw the surrounding flowers, grass, and trees bowing down in submission. Only the weathered pine tree remained calm and unperturbed, unaffected by the onslaught of the fierce wind. In that moment, I couldn't help but feel a newfound respect for the ease with which it faced adversity.

The pine tree didn't possess a glamorous appearance. It presented itself before people with a natural, unadorned shade of green, the color of nature. It didn't covet vanity; it wore the same green attire throughout the year, even changing into four new sets during the winter. Unlike flowers, which wither after their brilliance fades, or grass, which disperses its fragrance, the pine tree led an ordinary life but steadfastly remained at its post, dedicating its entire existence to our shared homeland. One could say it had a sense of duty and a long and arduous journey until it vanished completely.

More importantly, through the pine tree, I could see resilience, an indomitable spirit that never surrendered. When sudden rainstorms approached, it reminded us that without experiencing storms, how could we see rainbows? When bitterly cold winters arrived with bone-chilling winds, it taught us that the sharpest sword is forged from grinding, and the fragrance of plum blossoms emanates from enduring the cold. All of this deeply moved me.

In fact, aren't there many such people hidden in our lives?

Mount Tai, renowned as the leader of the Five Sacred Mountains, commands awe with its height and perilousness. Yet, it is the unsung heroes who tirelessly work up and down the mountain, constructing layer after layer of steps with their unwavering determination, that allow visitors to witness the grandeur and greatness of Mount Tai. Otherwise, how would we comprehend the phrase "overlooking all other mountains"?

A gust of wind brought me back to reality, and I stood gazing at the path. I was no longer the same person as before because I had discovered the secret hidden deep within the heart of the pine tree.

Answer

In this narrative, a person walks home along a dimly lit street and suddenly feels a sense of inexplicable loneliness. They notice a weathered pine tree and approach it, initially perceiving it as ordinary and overlooked. However, when confronted by a gust of wind that causes other elements of nature to submit, the pine tree remains steadfast and undisturbed. This encounter leads the person to realize the hidden strength and resilience within the pine tree, teaching them valuable lessons about facing adversity and appreciating the seemingly ordinary in life. The narrative concludes by suggesting that there are similar individuals in our lives, like the unsung workers on Mount Tai, whose determination and perseverance contribute to the greatness we often overlook.
